The death of a FUNAAB professor in Ogun was caused by a car hit and run.

Oladipo Ademuyiwa, a professor at the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta, was killed by a driver who hit and run.

The accident occurred on the newly rehabilitated Kemta-Somorin Road in Kemta area of Abeokuta on Sunday, February 16, 2025.

Ademuyiwa, a professor of biochemical toxicology in his early sixties, had just alighted from a cab and was attempting to cross the road from the Prof Wole Soyinka end when he was hit by a speeding vehicle. It has been reported that the driver has left the scene.

On Tuesday, Dr. Ayo Ajasa, the chairman of the Ajebo Road Housing Estate Community Development Association, described the incident as a tragedy that could have been avoided.

He said that the Ogun State Government was responsible for not heeding repeated calls to install speed breakers on the road.

He said that the unfortunate incident that took place on Sunday, February 16, 2025 again highlights the urgent need for government intervention to prevent further tragedies.

Despite our numerous appeals to the Ogun State Government and relevant agencies, we still haven't made any effort to install speed breakers and other necessary safety measures, which is disappointing. The government didn't hesitate to put speed bumps on the Ilugun end of the road, but they have consistently ignored our requests to safeguard lives in Ajebo Road Housing Estate.

According to Ajasa, the professor's death was a significant loss to the community and the nation, as he had contributed to academia.

To avoid more accidents, he urged the government to immediately install speed breakers and lorry barriers along the road, as well as clear traffic signage to warn motorists against reckless driving. He called for a stronger law enforcement effort to prevent excessive speeding within the estate.

"It is unacceptable that a community of law-abiding citizens must endure repeated accidents, near-fatal encounters, and now the death of an esteemed professor, simply due to government inaction.

“Another accident occurred within 24 hours of this tragic incident, proving that this road remains a death trap.”
