Four people were arrested for cutting down trees in Bauchi.

Four people have been arrested by BASEPA officials for illegally felling trees with a chainsaw for timber production.

The State Police Command assisted in the arrests, in accordance with laws that prohibit tree felling in the state.

According to reports, the suspects were caught in Nahuta village along the Darazo-Bauchi Federal Highway while the Director General of the Agency, Dr. Mahmud Bose, was conducting a routine surveillance mission to enforce the law against tree felling.

During his surveillance, Dr. Bose encountered the four offenders while traveling along the road, as explained in an interview with Tribune Online.

He paused and casually approached them to inquire about their actions without disclosing his identity.

I made a casual call away from the offenders, asking for police support from Darazo Division. In addition, I contacted the Chairman of Darazo LGC and let him know about my discovery. Afterwards, he joined us at the scene of the incident, as he explained.

When the police arrived, the offenders realized the seriousness of their offence. Afterward, the police arrested and took them into custody.

While narrating his side of the story, the leader of the group who is from Gombe State, explained that he bought the tree from a land vendor in Nahuta village (the scene of the offence) with the aim of felling and chopping the tree into timber for profit.

He acknowledged that the felling of trees was a crime and that it was his first time being arrested, regretting his actions.

According to the relevant law, the four suspects are being investigated and prosecuted by the police in Darazo.
