The woman demands protection from her husband after he burned her clothes and destroyed her phones due to suspicion of cheating.

After years of emotional distress caused by her husband's actions, a Harare woman has turned to legal protection. Edina Mushonga took her husband, Given Chamura, to the Harare Civil Court in Zimbabwe, accusing him of burning her clothes and destroying her phones repeatedly due to suspicions of infidelity.

At the court hearing, Edina recounted her ordeal, describing how Given would burn her clothes and destroy her mobile phones, accusing her of unfaithfulness. He tore apart my clothes, claiming that I am sleeping around. He occasionally burns my favorite dresses and skirts, citing their revealing nature. He has a habit of destroying my phones, telling me that I'll talk to other men. She added that this behavior had continued for several years, causing her emotional exhaustion.

Given confessed to burning his wife's clothes and breaking her phones, but argued that he was only doing it to keep her safe from unwanted attention. “I was trying to protect her. My fear is that she will bring shame to my family,” he said.

Magistrate Meenal Naratom decided that Given's actions were not acceptable and infringed upon his wife's rights while presiding over the case. Edina was granted a protection order by the court and given counseling.
