Attorney Tony Buzbee is being sued by rapper Jay-Z for false accusations of r@pe and claiming $20 million in losses.
Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter has taken legal action against Texas-based attorney Tony Buzbee, alleging that he infringed on his intellectual property, including defamation, civil extortion, and intentional emotional harm.
In October 2024, Jay-Z and fellow music executive Sean 'Diddy' Combs were sued by r@pe, but it was dismissed. This led to the lawsuit.
Jay-Z claims that the false allegations strategically filed the night before his daughter Blue Ivy’s highly anticipated Mufasa: The Lion King movie premiere, resulted in severe personal and financial damage including the loss of $20 million in business contracts.
The initial complaint, dubbed by Jane Doe, alleged that Jay-Z and Diddy had sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl at an MTV Video Music Awards afterparty in 2000.
The entertainment industry was shocked by the claims, which caused widespread media attention and put Jay-Z's reputation on the line.
The case was dismissed with prejudice on February 14, 2025, which means that it cannot be refiled in the future. Jay-Z responded with a statement
“The frivolous, fictitious, and appalling allegations have been dismissed. The lawsuit was without merit and never going anywhere.”
. According to the rap icon, the lawsuit's timing was deliberate and malicious, intended to force him into a no-win situation.
“I felt that Mr. Buzbee was placing a gun to my head—that I either bow to his demands or endure personal and financial ruin.”
Jay-Z claimed that the lawsuit was strategically put in just hours before Blue Ivy's major night at the Mufasa: The Lion King premiere. As a proud father, he wished to aid his daughter's significant moment, but the accusations were threatening to overshadow the event.
Jay-Z mentioned that the false allegations resulted in $20 million in lost contracts. According to reports, the scandal resulted in the cancellation of business deals and endorsements, as companies distanced themselves due to the controversy.
The rapper, entrepreneur, and philanthropist shared the immense psychological stress he went through, stating that the lawsuit forced him to hide to avoid negative media attention. According to him, the emotional distress was a meticulously planned attack on his character and legacy.
The purpose of his lawsuit is to seek financial damages and establish a precedent against attorneys who misuse the legal system for personal or professional gain.
