At least 20 people, including children, were injured when an Afghan man's car crashed into a crowd, resulting in his arrest.
A Mini Cooper ploughed through a crowd of people in Munich on Thursday morning, February 13, causing at least 20 injuries.
According to Bild, the driver, a 26-year-old Afghan man, was taken into custody after the incident. The driver was secured on site and Munich Police took to social media to assure that there is no further danger.
The incident comes as world defence leaders, including US Vice-President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, gather in the Bavarian city for a major security conference.
According to reports, the driver accelerated into demonstrators associated with the Verdi trade union on Seidlstraße at around 10:30am, resulting in the injuries of at least 20 people, including a child.
According to eyewitness accounts, there were two men in the Mini and shots were fired before the driver was detained. The local police have announced on Twitter that there is a major police operation in the area.
According to a German journalist who was a witness on social media, the incident caused people to cry and shake on the ground.
Sandra Demmelhuber reported that a young man was taken away by the police after lying on the street.
People sat on the ground, crying and shaking. Details are still unclear,' the reporter added.
Ambulances are currently on site as they attempt to aid victims who were hit and police are working on confirming whether the driver had acted deliberately when driving into the rally.
According to Bild, police investigations need to determine whether he drove into the crowd intentionally or accidentally misjudged the accelerator and brake.
Bayerischer Rundfunk was contacted by a demonstrator who stated that they were at the demonstration and witnessed a man lying underneath a car. I made an effort to open the door, but it was locked.
He retreated and took care of the injured when the police came and shot at the car window.
Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter told Bild that the police chief has just informed me that a vehicle hit a group of people, and unfortunately many people, including children, were injured. I am in a state of deep shock.
