According to reports, a 14-year-old boy d!ed after injecting himself with butterfly remains mixed with water as part of an unusual online challenge.
Davi Nunes Moreira, who was 14 years old, succumbed to his health deteriorating and vomiting in a hospital in Planalto, Brazil.
According to Mail Online, Moreira initially told his father that he had suffered an injury during play and subsequently developed a limp. He informed medics that he went to a chemist to mix a dead butterfly with water and then injected the liquid into his leg as his condition worsened.
It was reported that Davi's body may have shut down as he went into septic shock as a result of toxins in the mix.
The police have begun an investigation into the claims and are waiting for the complete post-mortem results to determine if it was part of an unusual internet challenge.
Davi died in a hospital in the northeast Brazilian state of Bahia last Wednesday.
Davi's death is being investigated by the Civil Police in Vitoria da Conquista.
According to a spokesman for the force, the autopsy results will aid in clarifying the cause of death.
The investigation's aim is to clarify what transpired.
Davi's father found the syringe his son used to inject himself under his pillow while he was tidying up the house, according to local reports.
Professor Marcelo Duarte, director of Sao Paulo University's Zoology Museum and a butterfly specialist, said: 'Butterflies have a complex biology, and the fluids present in their bodies have not been studied in depth in terms of their toxicity to humans.'
